| Dry, brittle and splitting nails is a condition called Onychoschizia and it may affect as much as 20% of the U.S. population. This condition is more common in women than in men (approximatly 2:1). The characteristic is dehydration of the nail plate resulting in the tips and surface of the nails to become brittle and splitting into layers causing small pieces of nails to flake off.
The dehydration of the nail plate can be set off by many factors. The factors may be excessive exposure to washing, soaps, detergents, cleaning agents, nail polish remover, adhesives, primers, acrylics and even dry and cold atmospheric conditions that can result in increased evaporation from the nail plate. Also, nails tend to become more brittle with age and dietary deficiencies.
